Home | Resource Mapping and Inventories

A major role of the Remote Sensing Applications Center is to promote the appropriate use of remote sensing to provide the information resource managers need. Remote sensing typically provides information in two forms 1) wall-to-wall resource mapping and 2) resource inventories. Following are links to selected resource mapping and selected resource inventory projects that we have recently completed. Because vegetation mapping is a core information need within the Forest Service, we provide that as a separate category of resource mapping.

Forest Vegetation Resources

Forest Vegetation Resource Mapping.  Information about the spatial distribution of forest vegetation is one of the most fundamental needs for Forest Service land managers. RCR personnel are actively engaged in all aspects of forest vegetation mapping, from developing innovative ways to analyze geospatial data to managing large vegetation mapping projects. Other Resource Mapping

Other Resource Mapping. Although forest vegetation mapping is the cornerstone of Forest Service resource management, RedCastle Resources has participated in many projects that have focused on mapping other important resources such as wildlife habitat, geology, range conditions and more. A brief selection of example resource mapping projects is provided by clicking this link.

Resource Inventories

Resource Inventories. The major application of remotely sensed data has traditionally been viewed as a source for wall-to-wall mapping. Mapping provides the answers to the important resource management questions of what and where. Resource inventories differ from mapping in that they attempt to answer the question of how much or what condition and are less concerned with the question of where.
